Hawea Wave

ATTENTION SURFERS - do not wear leg leashes. Instead, attach leashes to your biceps or waist.

There is a significant danger or drowning if you fall off your board and are carried downriver to become trapped around the Camp Hill Road bridge support. The flow of the river can prevent you from reaching upstream and releasing a leg leash, resulting in you being dragged underwater.

Surfers and kayakers rescued one person from a near-drowning caused by this scenario in 2017.

Surfing the river has specific hazards which makes it very different from surfing the ocean.
